Our current women's collection is eleven pieces, on purpose, enough to build a genuinely varied everyday wardrobe without redundancy. Here's roughly how we think about combining them.
Start with two or three core layers that work in almost any weather, a shirt style that layers under or over other pieces. Add one or two bottoms that pair with all of your tops rather than just one. From there, a couple of dress-length or layering pieces extend the range for warmer days or slightly dressier occasions without adding a separate "occasion wardrobe."
The goal of a small, well-chosen collection isn't to limit you, it's that eleven considered pieces in coordinating natural tones can produce far more outfit combinations than a much larger wardrobe of mismatched impulse buys.
As we add categories (wool layers, home textiles)the idea stays the same: fewer pieces, chosen so they actually work together.
